Dari sanalah Akdong Musician berhasil tampil di beberapa panggung dan mengeluarkan sebuah single berjudul "Galaxy" yang dijadikan soundtrack iklan smartphone Samsung.
Namun nama mereka mulai dikenal publik saat mengikuti sebuah ajang pencarian bakat "K-pop Star" season 2 pada 2012.
Menyanyikan lagu "Breathe" dari Miss A dan lagu ciptaan sendiri berjudul "Don't Cross Your Legs", Akdong Musician sukses menyihir 3 juri yang terdiri dari Park Jin Young, BoA dan Yang Hyun Suk.
Dengan penampilan yang menarik, suara yang bagus dan aransemen lagu yang baik, akhirnya Akdong Musician berhasil memenangkan kompetisi ini.
Sukses menjadi juara, Akdong musician kemudian mengeluarkan beberapa single seperti "You Are Attractive". Lagu tersebut juga yang mengantarkan mereka meraih Rookie of The month December dalam ajang Cyworld Digital Music Awards 2012.
Selain itu mereka juga mengisi soundtrack drama salah satunya "All About My Romance" dengan lagu berjudul "I Love You".
Akhirnya pada Mei 2013, Akdong Musician memutuskan untuk bergabung dengan YG Entertainment, agensi yang menaungi Big Bang, 2NE1, PSY dan Lee Hi. Akdong Musician menilai YG Entertainment adalah tempat yang tepat untuk mengembangkan bakat mereka.
"Kami mencari tempat di mana kami bisa mengekspresikan musik kami," ujar Lee Soo Hyun. "Kami memilih YG karena perusahaan ini mau mendengarkan pendapat seluruh artisnya dan memilihkan yang terbaik."
